Spoor & Fisher Adult Education Centre

There are currently many forward looking educational solutions in South Africa helping young, born-free South Africans gain the necessary education and skills to enable them to live happy and fulfilling lives. There are far fewer looking back, reaching out to help bridge a generational gap in education that left many people behind.

It is a sad legacy of apartheid that a significant portion of the South African population has had little to no access to any formal education, leaving them unable to read or write. This has not only had a negative impact on their lives (emotionally, intellectually and materially) - but also on the lives of their children. We believe our project helps make a difference in the lives of those people. Literacy empowers people and gives them back their dignity.

Our school is open to anyone who is illiterate. Whilst the bulk of our learners have been domestic workers and gardeners who have been unable to find any other kind of work as a result of their illiteracy, no-one - whatever their age - is turned away several young adults who for a variety of reasons never went further than Grade 7 in school have also been assisted.

Spoor & Fisher remains humbled and grateful that we can, in a small way, help disadvantaged South Africans live better lives. By financing the project from teachers’ salaries, learner’s books, stationery and exam fees, to renting the premises, we are changing real lives every day.
