Habitat for Humanity 2007

In 2007, Spoor & Fisher’s social responsibility programme was expanded to include a partnership with Habitat for Humanity to build a house for for the Kutu family who are members of KAVOSH (Katlehong South & Vosloorus Self – Help Housing Scheme)

Alice Kutu who was the recipient of the house is aged 59 and has been living in a shack in Katlehong Township since 1980.  In 1994, she and her family were relocated to a new site with the promise that they would be provided with a RDP house.  This never happened. Due to the death of her daughter she now has to care for her grandchildren and her only income is her disability grant as she recently lost her husband.

The entire company became involved and the staff who did not give of their time in building donated clothes, household goods, trees and grass for a garden and supplied furniture. Over R11,000 was raised to help Alice complete the house and help her grandchildren start their life in their new home.

In August 2007, Smith Tabata Buchanan Boyes Attorneys (STRB), Spoor & Fisher and Werksmans Attorneys got together with Habitat for Humanity and built homes for three low income families in Katlehong, Ekhuruleni as part of our respective social responsibility programmes. This group was called the “Gauteng Legal Community’ build and in 2008 we hope to encourage more legal firms to join the community and help build even more homes.
