Adult Education Centre

In September 1994 Spoor & Fisher opened an adult education centre under the auspices of Project Literacy, after establishing the need for such a centre through a community survey. We were initially attracted to Project Literacy for the reason that it promotes both literacy and basic education as fundamental human rights.

The scheme is committed to reducing the backlog in education caused by the inequalities of the past and aims to provide literacy skills and educational upgrading with job-related training for as many educationally disadvantaged adults in the Centurion area as possible.

The centre currently employs three teachers, who have been sponsored by the firm to complete the ABET programmed offered by the University of South Africa.  The Centre has an annual student complement of 60. We teach mother tongue literacy in Sepedi, Zulu and English. We also teach numeracy. Each year consistently from 1994 we have had between 20 and 30 adult learners successfully pass the Independent examination board exams in literacy, on one level or another.

There is no cost to the students for their studies or examinations.
