Santa Shoebox: “The joy of Giving”

Santa Shoebox is a charity organisation that was founded in Cape Town in 2006. The mission of the organisation is to connect people and bring joy by facilitating the giving of gifts to under-privileged children. This entails obtaining a commitment from various communities and corporates to pledge a box (or boxes). Once you have pledged a box, you receive a child’s name, age and gender. You are then required to fill a shoebox with gifts for the child.

When the Santa Shoebox Project originated in 2006, it delivered a mere 180 shoeboxes. The organisation has grown exponentially since then and has managed to distribute 551 979 shoeboxes throughout South Africa and Namibia in the past 10 years. Shoeboxes are distributed to more than 1000 recipient facilities, through more than 60 satellites around South Africa and Namibia.

Spoor & Fisher donated items to fill the Santa Shoeboxes. Once we had learnt about the incredible work done by the organisation, we couldn’t wait to get involved!

Spoor & Fisher’s Cape Town office made a pledge to support the Santa Shoebox Project this year. Each person who pledged a shoebox received a child’s particulars along with a list of eight items to be packed and wrapped for the child to receive as a Christmas present. A toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, wash towel, educational supplies, toys, sweets and clothes made up the list. On 30 October 2016, 19 boxes were delivered on behalf of Spoor & Fisher, Cape Town.

Thanks to the generosity of the staff, 19 children will not only receive a personalised shoebox filled with daily necessities, but they will also be presented with the promise of a better education, improved hygiene and dental health as well as simple things that are so often taken for granted, such as toys and sweets.

The Pretoria office also joined in the fun and pledged boxes towards this initiative. A total of ten boxes were pledged and filled with presents, and as much joy and laughter as can be filled into a shoebox. The shoeboxes were delivered on 29 October 2016 to the Pretoria East depot.

It was truly amazing to see the organisation and dedication of the Santa Shoebox volunteers who dedicate their time to the project and deliver shoeboxes on an industrial scale. These volunteers really are like Christmas elves working non-stop to bring joy to the hearts of thousands of children.

Spoor & Fisher plans to at least double the donations next year.
