Revised format of official numbers in South Africa (20th century cases)

So as to ensure uniformity in the use of official numbers, a notice was published in the March 2015 edition of the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (“CIPC”) Patent Journal to the effect that the following format has been adopted in respect of numbering of all patents, designs, trade marks and copyright.

  • The century now forms part of the official number, followed by a “/” and a five digit variable number.
  • Thus, the official number previously recorded as 81/123 has been changed to 1981/00123.

We are in the process of revising our records accordingly but will maintain the earlier official number as well and, as such, clients may quote either the original or amended official number when instructing us.
