Launch of the DOT cities - AFRICA, JOBURG, DURBAN & CAPE TOWN

The ZA Central Registry (ZACR), the domain name registration authority in South Africa, has launched the initial phase of the following “Geo-TLD’s” (Geographical Top Level Domains):

By way of example, registration of,, etc. will be possible in the future.

Unfortunately, the timelines initially provided had been overrun which, in turn, affect the various registration phases.

ZACR have initiated a “Special Launch Program” with the “sunrise” and “landrush” phases running concurrently, followed by general availability registrations.

Phase 1 Sunrise | 1 July 2014 - 11 October 2014

  • Sunrise: For the sunrise phase, trade marks and brand names will be given priority.

Phase 2: Landrush | 1 July 2014 - 3 November 2014

  • Landrush, in turn refers to a process in terms of which “popular” and descriptive words, such as “law”, “info”, “tel”, etc. are allocated; and

Phase 3: General Availability | 4 November 2014 onward

  • General Availability: Once the sunrise and landrush phases come to an end, domain names may be registered on a “first come, first served” basis.

During the sunrise period the new Geo-TLD’s were launched. Trade mark proprietors can apply to register a domain name corresponding with their pre-validated trade mark registrations. Trade marks may be validated through an approved Trademark Clearing House (“TMCH”) and a local Mark Validation System (“MVS”).

The TMCH/MVS in essence “clears” a potential domain name based on registered trade mark rights and precludes the use of such domain name by third parties. To ensure that priority is given to the registration of your preferred domain name under the new Geo-TLD’s, we recommend that it be validated.

If you require any further information, pertaining to the validation or eventual registration of domain names under the new Geo-TLD’s, please contact our domain name administrator, Ms. Jillian Barkley (
