Egypt Update on Patent Annuities and Patent Duration

The Egyptian Patent Office has issued a notification dated 6 June 2009 that annuities for national phase patent applications filed under national phase of Cooperation Treaty (PCT) are calculated starting from the international filing date of the application.

Retroactive annuities are therefore due for pending and granted Egyptian PCT national phase applications which were filed prior to 6 June 2009. A grace period of 6 months until 6 December 2009 has been granted for payment of outstanding retroactive annuities.

The term of an Egyptian patent granted on a PCT national phase application has also been changed to 20 years calculated from the PCT International application filing date.
