Should you be interested in a position as a Professional Assistant the following information may serve as a useful guide to the qualifications required for such a position.

Trade Mark Practitioner

Any person who aspires to become a Trade Mark Practitioner must first study towards obtaining an LLB degree. The next step is to secure Articles of Clerkship in a firm like Spoor & Fisher who practice in the fields of intellectual property law. The period of articles for LLB graduates is two years. Whilst serving articles candidates must apply to the South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law for student membership in order to study towards the Trade Mark Practitioners qualification as set by the Institute. Into the second year of articles candidates must enrol for and pass the Attorneys Admission Exams to enable them on completion of their articles to become admitted as a qualified Attorney in the Supreme Court of SA.

Patent Practitioner

To enter into the field of Patent law a candidate must have a technical or science degree as well as, a law degree. Having obtained a law degree, the candidate must complete his or her articles, pass the Attorneys Admission Examinations and be admitted as an attorney. For candidates joining Spoor & Fisher without a law degree, it usually takes at least four years to be admitted as an attorney. Our recruitment process for professional staff begins in January of each year for positions for the following year.
